Vessel on Fire in Strait of Hormuz; Crew Status Unknown

(MENAFN) A vessel was sighted burning in the Strait of Hormuz early Thursday, and the fate of its crew remains unknown, a maritime security monitoring body said.

The fire was reported at 03:00 GMT, roughly 9 nautical miles (17 km) north of Khasab, Oman, according to a warning issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The alert said the master of a third-party vessel in the area saw the ship on fire and raised the alarm.

No damage assessment has been received, and there is no report yet on any environmental impact.

Authorities are investigating. Ships transiting the area have been urged to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.
