Netanyahu-Eisenkot Power-Share Deal Reported; Herzog Denies
The channel said President Isaac Herzog is working to advance the arrangement, which could open a path to a new government after Tuesday’s inconclusive parliamentary elections. It claimed Herzog has promoted the plan for two years, long before the campaign began and the results were announced.
The proposal could become viable if the current distribution of parliamentary seats holds, the channel suggested. It added that Netanyahu would likely insist on serving first so he can keep working alongside US President Donald Trump.
Herzog’s office rejected the report outright, calling it “a complete lie.”
“It never happened. We do not engage in speculation regarding the process of assigning the task of forming a government,” the office said.
The office added that official election results will not reach the president until next Wednesday. Herzog will then open consultations with parliamentary factions under his constitutional authority.
Preliminary results released Wednesday evening, with 85% of votes counted excluding special ballots, gave Netanyahu’s bloc 53 seats. The opposition bloc led by Eisenkot, head of the Yashar party, won 48, and Arab parties took 19, according to a separate Israeli television channel. No camp reaches the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-member Knesset.
Counting continues, including special ballots from soldiers, prisoners, diplomats and hospitalized voters.
The Central Elections Committee said Tuesday that turnout hit 77.7%. That is 7.1 percentage points above the 2022 elections and the highest since 1999.
Netanyahu has been on trial for years on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip. He has led a far-right government since late 2022, widely described as the most extreme in Israel’s history.
