Kallas Pushes for Protection of ICC Amid Growing Pressure
Speaking during a UN General Assembly side event focused on humanitarian diplomacy and international humanitarian law, Kallas said existing institutions responsible for enforcing international humanitarian law must be safeguarded.
“First, we defend the mechanisms we already have to uphold International Humanitarian Law, domestic courts as well as international courts, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, the ICC,” she said.
She emphasized that accountability remains an essential element in enforcing international humanitarian law and ensuring violations are addressed.
“Contrary to what should be happening, the ICC is now under immense pressure,” Kallas said.
According to Kallas, the pressure directed at the ICC and its judges extends beyond concerns about the court itself. She said it also prompts questions about the international legal order that was established following World War II and the commitment to maintaining it.
“And let us not forget, the ICC is the world's promise that victims of the gravest international crimes will not be forgotten because accountability has become politically inconvenient. We must protect it,” she said.
Kallas also argued that international law itself should not be viewed as the central problem, maintaining that “impunity breeds impunity.”
