Despite Australia's geographic remove from the conflict zone, Albanese underscored that no nation was shielded from the economic shockwaves now radiating outward — pointing to surging inflation and mounting financial uncertainty as direct consequences.
Acknowledging that President Donald Trump acted in response to the destruction of a US Apache helicopter by Iranian fire, Albanese nonetheless kept focus on the broader objective: "We want to see peace break out in the region in a permanent way."
The military exchange has since escalated sharply. US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American fighter jets struck Iranian air defense installations and radar facilities near the Strait of Hormuz in direct retaliation for the helicopter downing.
Iran wasted no time responding. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced in the early hours of Wednesday that it had launched retaliatory strikes against 21 American military targets spanning US air and naval bases across the region — a significant broadening of the confrontation that has raised fears of a wider war.
