Scientists Develop DNA Tool to Predict Human Traits

(MENAFN) A consortium of European researchers, including specialists from Poland’s Jagiellonian University and the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police in Warsaw, has contributed to the development of a powerful forensic instrument capable of estimating a person’s age and other characteristics from DNA with impressive precision.

The collaborative initiative, called VISAGE (Visible Attributes through Genomics), united professionals from more than twelve institutions across Europe to achieve this groundbreaking advancement.

Dr. Ewelina Pospiech, a professor at Poland’s Pomeranian Medical University and former researcher at Jagiellonian University, participated in the effort and hailed it as a “major success for Poland,” according to a broadcaster.

She added: “The tool it generated is currently being tested and validated worldwide. This is truly a significant achievement.”

Pospiech explained that the project’s primary objective was “to develop methods that would allow it to predict various human characteristics with high accuracy, such as appearance, biogeographical origin and age based on DNA.”

The innovative forensic approach uses a chemical mechanism known as DNA methylation, where methyl groups are added to DNA strands to modify gene activity—a process that naturally evolves as individuals age.

While comparable methods have existed since 2011, Pospiech told a Polish state news agency that they do not always yield reliable results in criminal investigations, as biological samples are frequently small or degraded.
