Lavrov Confirms Putin Visit to China Planned for First Half of this Year

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit China in the first half of this year, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, following a two-day trip to Beijing, according to reports.

Lavrov told Russian media outlets, that preparations for the visit are still being finalized and details of the program cannot yet be disclosed.

He indicated that the visit is expected to include discussions tied to the renewal of long-standing bilateral agreements, including the Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship signed in July 2001.

“As part of the development of the program for President Putin's visit to China in the first half of this year, we proposed paying special attention to this area, the field of education, when preparing the summit agenda,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov has been in Beijing since Tuesday, where he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and later held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The visit comes as both countries mark key milestones in their bilateral relationship, including the 30th anniversary of their strategic partnership and the 25th anniversary of their friendship treaty.

Russian media outlet Vedomosti reported that Putin’s trip is likely to take place in May, possibly during the week of May 18, citing unnamed sources familiar with the planning.
