Florida Judge Rejects Trump Defamation Suit Against Wall Street Journal
The court ruled on Monday that Trump’s complaint failed to meet the legal threshold for actual malice, which requires proof that a statement was made with knowledge of its falsity or with reckless disregard for the truth.
In the ruling, the judge said the claims “comes nowhere close” to satisfying that standard and pointed out that the reporting process included efforts to seek comment from relevant parties.
The decision noted that Trump was contacted before publication and provided a denial, while US law enforcement agencies either declined to comment or did not respond. The ruling also referenced claims that the publication reviewed the material at the center of the report.
The judge concluded that the evidence presented undermined the argument that the defendants acted with malicious intent or failed to investigate properly.
The lawsuit was filed last year following a report alleging that a 2003 birthday collection prepared for Epstein included a card attributed to Trump, who was known to have had social ties with Epstein at the time.
