PM set to address public over Trump-induced diplomatic row
Sir Keir Starmer is aware that both the public and businesses are looking for a clear response regarding the possibility of additional US tariffs targeting the UK and European allies. The situation stems from Trump’s pursuit of Greenland, the self-governing Danish territory he has expressed interest in acquiring.
Trump has warned that he will impose new taxes on eight US allies—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK—starting February 1 if they continue to resist his efforts to assert control over Greenland. A longtime analyst of Western diplomacy described the situation as unprecedented in eight decades, calling it “pure political coercion against Nato allies over the attempted seizing of a chunk of territory—it’s astonishing.”
In the early hours of Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social that NATO had advised Denmark for “20 years” to “get the Russian threat away from Greenland” and added, “Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!”
Sir Keir is expected to emphasize that he views the imposition of tariffs as a mistake and to underline that he communicated this point directly to Trump during a phone call on Sunday.
Downing Street confirmed that Sir Keir spoke with the Danish prime minister, the European Commission president, and the NATO secretary-general before speaking with the US president.
