Trump says Iran reached out on nuclear talks amid rising tensions

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump stated Sunday that Iranian officials contacted Washington to explore possible negotiations over the country’s nuclear program, suggesting a potential diplomatic opening despite ongoing tensions.

Speaking aboard Air Force One while traveling from Florida to Washington, D.C., Trump explained that the outreach occurred on Saturday. “They called yesterday. Iran called to negotiate yesterday,” he said. “I think they're tired of being beat up by the United States. Iran wants to negotiate.”

Trump noted that preparations for a meeting were underway but cautioned that developments inside Iran could force the U.S. to act before any talks take place. “We may meet with them,” he said. “I mean, a meeting is being set up, but we may have to act, because of what's happening, before the meeting. But, a meeting is being set up. Iran called. They want to negotiate.”

The remarks come as Iran faces widespread unrest. Protests that began in late December over the collapse of the rial and worsening economic conditions have spread nationwide, with reports of mounting casualties.

Trump added that his administration is monitoring the situation closely and considering next steps. “The military is looking at it, and we're looking at some very strong options. We'll make a determination,” he said.
