Ex-Georgian PM Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
"The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has signed a plea agreement with the accused Irakli Garibashvili, according to which the former prime minister was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for the crime under Article 194, part three of the Criminal Code of Georgia," the office said in a statement.
Beyond incarceration, Garibashvili faces a 1 million lari penalty (approximately $370,000), while assets acquired through illicit means have been seized by state authorities.
"Irakli Garibashvili admits the crime and agrees with the terms of the plea agreement. The court has already satisfied the motion of the prosecutor's office on plea agreement," the statement added.
Criminal Activity Spanned Five Years
Prosecutors determined that Garibashvili conducted unauthorized business operations and submitted fraudulent income disclosures between 2019 and 2024.
The criminal proceedings originated from an October 2023 raid when Georgian special services confiscated more than $7 million during coordinated searches of residences belonging to multiple former government officials, including Garibashvili.
