Argentina Freezes Embassy Relocation to Jerusalem

(MENAFN) Argentina has put on hold its plan to transfer its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, following heightened friction between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Argentine President Javier Milei, a news agency reported on Saturday.

According to a news agency, cited by a media outlet, the disagreement stems from intentions by Israeli-owned firm Navitas Petroleum to commence offshore oil exploration near the Falkland Islands, with operations expected to begin in 2028.

The Falkland Islands are overseen by Britain as an overseas territory, though Argentina asserts sovereignty over the area, referring to it as the Islas Malvinas.

In December, Argentina condemned Navitas and UK-based Rockhopper Exploration after the companies revealed what Buenos Aires labeled an unlawful offshore oil initiative valued at roughly $2.1 billion near the islands.

Argentina insisted the project lacked its authorization and therefore represented a “unilateral decision” by Britain. Rockhopper has been banned from conducting business in Argentina since 2013, when its activities were criminalized, while Navitas faced a similar prohibition in 2022 for unauthorized drilling.

A United Nations resolution from 1976 stipulates that neither Argentina nor Britain should undertake unilateral measures regarding the territory while sovereignty discussions are ongoing.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has attempted to reassure Argentine authorities that Israel has no role in Navitas’ activities and does not control the publicly traded company, the news agency reported.
