Benin Starts Vote Count After Municipal, Parliamentary Elections
Five political groups, including former President Boni Yayi’s party Les Democrates, competed for seats in the National Assembly.
The vote took place just one month after a failed coup attempt on Dec. 7, which was suppressed by loyalist forces with assistance from Nigeria.
Polling centers closed at 5 p.m. (0400GMT), with the process described as calm and well-organized by the observer coalition Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Elections and Peace (COSCEP-Benin).
The group urged Benin’s electoral commission to guarantee an impartial count free from external interference and to post results publicly at each station.
Roughly 8 million citizens were registered to choose lawmakers for the 109-seat National Assembly and 77 municipal representatives, according to the national election body.
Official results are anticipated in the coming days. Analysts predict that President Patrice Talon’s governing alliance, which currently controls 81 seats in parliament, is likely to maintain its majority.
Earlier, electoral commission chief Sacca Lafia assured that all necessary measures had been implemented to secure a fair, transparent, and safe vote.
