Former Malaysian PM Admitted to Hospital
Medical examination has determined that the centenarian leader "suffered a fracture to the right hip," according to Sufi Yusoff, who released a statement to media.
Mahathir is "expected to be admitted" to the National Heart Institute (IJN) located in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, "for the next few weeks for treatment and observation," Yusoff said.
The elderly statesman, who celebrated his 100th birthday this past July, took a fall within his residence during the early hours of Tuesday morning around 7:30 a.m. local time (0330GMT), his aide reported.
Emergency transport brought the former prime minister to medical facilities at approximately 9:30 a.m. (0530GMT), Yusoff added.
Mahathir has undergone multiple medical interventions throughout his life, including cardiac bypass operations.
Most recently, last July saw him admitted to the IJN after he experienced exhaustion during an outdoor gathering in Putrajaya.
The hospitalization of Mahathir—who served as Malaysia's leader during two separate tenures and remains one of Asia's most prominent political veterans—comes as the country continues to navigate its political landscape. His decades-long influence on Malaysian politics and Southeast Asian affairs has made him one of the region's most recognizable statesmen.
