US Sen. declares Cuba’s future is numbered after US raid in Venezuela

(MENAFN) A senior US senator has warned that Cuba’s future is in jeopardy in the wake of recent US military action in Venezuela that led to the detention of President Nicolas Maduro.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday while traveling aboard Air Force One with President Donald Trump, Senator Lindsey Graham issued a stark message toward Havana. “Just wait for Cuba. Cuba is a communist dictatorship that has killed priests and nuns, they have preyed on their own people, their days are numbered,” Graham said.

He went on to outline a broader vision for the region’s future, adding: “We're going to wake up one day, I hope in 2026, in our backyard we're going to have allies in these countries doing business with America, not narco-terrorist dictators killing Americans.”

The remarks followed an announcement by Trump on Saturday that a US military operation in Venezuela had resulted in the capture of President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The US president also said Washington would temporarily assert control over the country, including through the deployment of US troops if required.

Maduro and Flores were transported to New York late Saturday and are currently being held at a detention facility in Brooklyn. They face US federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged links with gangs designated as terrorist organizations.

Maduro has rejected the allegations, while authorities in Caracas have demanded the couple’s release.

Cuba, meanwhile, said on Sunday that 32 of its fighters were killed during the US intervention in Venezuela. President Miguel Díaz-Canel declared Jan. 5 and 6 as national days of mourning in response to the deaths.
