Typhoon Fung-Wong Strikes Philippines

(MENAFN) At least two individuals lost their lives while approximately 1.4 million people were evacuated as a precautionary measure as Typhoon Fung-Wong lashed the Philippines on Monday.

"As for casualties, there were reports, but it is subject to validation," stated Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, a representative from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), while speaking to the press.

One fatality occurred due to drowning, and another resulted from a building collapse triggered by the typhoon, which is locally referred to as Uwan, in the northern region of Luzon. Additionally, two other people sustained injuries.

The storm completely demolished nearly 100 homes, while roughly 1,000 additional residences suffered varying degrees of damage.

Close to three million households experienced power outages on Sunday as a result of the typhoon.

The National Electrification Administration reported on Monday that assessments of the damage were still underway, according to a news agency.

Around 50 transmission lines remained nonfunctional on Monday.

Fung-Wong was downgraded from its super typhoon classification on Monday by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

In a Monday update, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported that the storm had been located southwest of Vigan City in the Philippines during the morning.

It was moving west-northwest at a speed of 30 kilometers (18 miles) per hour with maximum winds reaching 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour, as cited by a state-run news outlet.
