Trump directs lawyers to seek guidance from court on how to fund SNAP
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he has instructed government lawyers to request judicial clarification on how to legally provide funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amid the ongoing government shutdown.
"I have instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
His comments followed two separate federal court rulings ordering the administration to use emergency resources to partially sustain food stamp benefits for millions of low-income Americans throughout November.
"Our Government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available, and now two Courts have issued conflicting opinions on what we can and cannot do," Trump wrote.
He emphasized that he did not want Americans to suffer hunger “just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing” by reopening the government. “If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding, just like I did with Military and Law Enforcement Pay,” he added.
Trump also accused Democrats of prolonging the shutdown for political reasons, urging recipients of food assistance to pressure lawmakers. He said those relying on SNAP should “call the Senate Democrats, and tell them to reopen the Government.”
The current shutdown, which began on October 1 following stalled negotiations over federal spending priorities, has become the second-longest in U.S. history.
