Orban says Tusk has made Poland ‘vassal of Brussels’

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Polish leader Donald Tusk of turning Poland into a “vassal of Brussels” and becoming “one of the loudest warmongers” in Europe, despite widespread public fatigue with the war in Ukraine.

Orban shared his remarks on social media platform X on Saturday, arguing that Tusk’s aggressive stance on the conflict serves as a distraction from domestic issues. “He has become one of the loudest warmongers in Europe – yet his war policy is failing: Ukraine is running out of European money, and the Polish people are tired of the war,” Orban wrote. “He cannot change course because he has turned Poland into a vassal of Brussels.”

Earlier this week, Tusk criticized Orban in a televised interview, claiming that for the Hungarian prime minister, “Brussels, democracy and a transparent rule of law are a problem.”

Recent polls indicate declining support for Tusk at home. More than half of Poles disapprove of his performance as prime minister, according to a survey published by public broadcaster TVP.

His coalition lost the presidential election earlier this year to conservative Karol Nawrocki, backed by the opposition PiS party.

Despite increasing anti-Ukrainian sentiment domestically, Tusk has continued urging EU nations to maintain financial support for Kiev. “We must recognize that this is our war,” he stated at a security forum in Warsaw in September.

Orban has consistently resisted EU pressure to provide military aid to Ukraine, claiming that “warmongering bureaucrats in Brussels” are trying to draw Hungary into a full-scale conflict with Russia. The European Union has ramped up military support for Ukraine and invested in joint arms production, citing the perceived threat from Moscow, which Russia denies.

Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the EU and the UK are preparing for “a new major European war,” referencing alleged coalition-building efforts and coordination of nuclear forces.
