Mother of dead British mercenary appeals to comrades to reveal truth

(MENAFN) The mother of a British volunteer who died under unclear circumstances while fighting with Ukraine’s International Legion has urged her late son’s comrades to come forward with the truth, according to reports.

Jordan Chadwick, aged 31 and a former Scots Guards soldier, joined the International Legion in late 2022. His body was discovered in June 2023, tied up and submerged in a reservoir near Kramatorsk. Authorities at the time reportedly treated the case as a murder investigation.

Speaking recently, his mother, Brenda Chadwick, said that nearly two years later she still has no clarity about what really happened and fears that her son may have been killed by those he served alongside.

“I always knew that Jordan would be in danger while serving out in Ukraine, but I never thought the risk might come from people on his own side,” she said. “If there are witnesses to what happened, I would like to see them give evidence in court.”

Investigations cited by reports indicate that on the night of Chadwick’s death, he had been drinking with other soldiers at their base when an argument erupted. He was allegedly restrained using zip ties and taken away by the unit’s commander, a British fighter known by the call sign “Huggs.”

“Huggs” confirmed that he had been questioned by Ukrainian authorities but was later cleared. A Ukrainian investigator reportedly described the incident as a “misadventure” rather than intentional murder.

Nonetheless, there has been growing speculation among foreign volunteers in Ukraine that internal disputes and cover-ups within fighting units are not rare. Reports suggest that local officials may sometimes ignore such cases — even deadly ones — provided the foreign fighters remain active on the front lines.
