Lavrov Says US Faces Pressure from “European Hawks”
Lavrov made these comments during an interview on the Hungarian YouTube channel Ultrahang, which was broadcast on Sunday.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia is not attempting to meddle or "interfere" in the "internal considerations" of the US government.
However, he noted that the Trump administration has encountered significant pressure as part of the rapprochement process with Moscow that began during Trump’s presidency.
He stated, "We don’t want to create some discomfort for the United States, which is under huge, unbelievable pressure from the European ‘hawks’, from [Ukraine’s Vladimir] Zelensky, and others who don’t want to have any American-Russian cooperation on anything."
According to Lavrov, those opposing the negotiations between Washington and Moscow are actively working to sway President Trump from the stance he has consistently maintained.
The US president has long asserted that the conflict in Ukraine needs a comprehensive resolution, a point he reiterated during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Lavrov said.
Lavrov also underscored that it has been collectively agreed that the most effective way to bring an end to the devastating war between Russia and Ukraine is through a peace agreement, which would ensure the conflict's resolution.
"It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere ceasefire agreement. This is key," Lavrov explained.
In contrast, Lavrov pointed out a recent shift in US rhetoric, where some individuals are now advocating for "nothing but a ceasefire, immediate ceasefire, and then history will judge," which he described as a dramatic change in the tone of discussions. "It’s a very radical change," he remarked.
