Lavrov says Trump’s government is facing pressure from European hawks

(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused European and Ukrainian “hawks” of exerting “unbelievable” pressure on the Trump administration to disrupt ongoing negotiations with Moscow.

In an interview aired on a Hungarian YouTube channel, Lavrov emphasized that Russia is not attempting to influence or interfere in the internal decision-making of the United States, which has faced mounting pressure amid efforts to improve ties with Moscow.

“We don’t want to create some discomfort for the United States, which is under huge, unbelievable pressure from the European ‘hawks’, from [Ukraine’s Vladimir] Zelensky, and others who don’t want to have any American-Russian cooperation on anything,” Lavrov stated.

Lavrov claimed that those opposing the talks are “trying to push President Trump from the logic that he repeatedly presented in the past.” He noted that Trump has consistently maintained that the Ukraine conflict must be permanently resolved, a stance reaffirmed during his meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere ceasefire agreement. This is key,” Lavrov explained.

He criticized recent changes in US rhetoric calling for “nothing but a ceasefire, immediate ceasefire, and then history will judge,” describing them as a “very radical change.” Lavrov added, “This also means that the Europeans, they don’t sleep, they don’t eat, and they try to twist the hands of this administration.”

Moscow has insisted it seeks a lasting resolution to the conflict rather than a temporary halt, while Kiev and its Western supporters have repeatedly pushed for an immediate ceasefire, which Russia views as a tactic allowing Ukraine to regroup and rearm.
