Poland, Sweden Kick Off Joint Military Drill in Baltic Sea

(MENAFN) Poland and Sweden initiated their first-ever joint military drill on Monday, focused on testing rapid deployment capabilities and bolstering collective defense in the Baltic Sea region.

The exercise, named "Gotland Sentry", was announced by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz on the US-based social media platform X. He emphasized that this is “the first joint undertaking of this kind by Poland and Sweden” and a vital step for “the security of the Baltic.”

This operation comes after the two countries signed a bilateral defense cooperation agreement on September 2, which outlines joint efforts in the Baltic Sea and closer collaboration on defense technologies.

According to Poland's Operational Command (DORSZ), the short-notice military exercise (SNEX) aims to showcase the rapid movement of Polish and Swedish forces via air, sea, and land. The PAP news agency reported that the drill is designed to enhance interoperability, strengthen command structures, and assess security challenges in the Baltic.

SNEX drills are conducted with little warning, testing military readiness within a strict timeline. They are characterized by a high operational tempo, flexible command structures, and minimal planning, making them “one of the most demanding forms of military training,” as noted by DORSZ.

The command further highlighted that the exercise exemplifies how the countries' political alliance directly translates into "practical operational activities."
