IAEA Chief cautions of rise of nuclear armament

(MENAFN) The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, warned Friday of a global increase in nuclear armament following his meeting with Pope Leo XIV.

“Overall, we are witnessing a growth in nuclear arsenals rather than disarmament,” Grossi told Vatican News. He added that even countries without nuclear weapons are increasingly discussing their potential “necessity.”

Grossi emphasized the urgency of halting this trend and highlighted ongoing risks at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which remains dangerously close to active conflict zones.
