EU Expands Sanctions on Moldovan Opposition Figures

(MENAFN) The European Council has introduced punitive measures against seven people and three organizations in Moldova that are reportedly connected to the exiled opposition figure Ilan Shor.

The newly announced restrictions, revealed on Tuesday, are aimed at Shor’s “close associates,” who are accused of trying to undermine stability in the EU candidate nation.

Shor, a businessman originally from Israel, is the founder of the now-outlawed Euroskeptic SOR party and currently leads the Victory opposition bloc.

He escaped Moldova in 2019 in connection with a major financial fraud case involving banks. Subsequently, he lost his Moldovan citizenship and was convicted in absentia to serve a significant jail sentence.

Despite these developments, Shor has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the accusations are “politically motivated.”

In 2023, the EU imposed sanctions on him, and he later received citizenship from Russia.

In addition, the European Council has added the Victory bloc to its list of sanctioned entities, accusing it of “spreading false information” and engaging in “vote buying.”

Two other organizations were also penalized for allegedly attempting to manipulate electoral outcomes.

Those targeted by the new measures will face asset freezes and restrictions on travel, while the sanctions also bar the provision of any financial or economic support to them.

With these new additions, the total number of Moldovan individuals and entities facing EU sanctions has increased to 23 people and five organizations.
