Greece deals with fifty wildfires amid scorching heat

(MENAFN) Firefighters across Greece were tackling more than 50 wildfires on Sunday, as an intensifying heatwave and strong winds heightened the risk of rapid fire spread, according to reports.

One of the most critical fires broke out in a wooded area in Argolida on the Peloponnese peninsula, posing serious challenges for both ground crews and aerial units. Earlier in the day, significant blazes near the seaside resort of Aliki in central Greece and on the island of Evia were brought under control after they swept through dry vegetation and came dangerously close to populated areas.

Authorities issued evacuation warnings in several regions as a safety measure, the Fire Service stated.

Although no injuries have been reported, the scale of the fire activity remains alarming. Since June, over 1,000 wildfire incidents have been recorded, according to Costas Tsigkas, president of the Association of Greek Firefighter Officers. In remarks to local media, he cautioned the public to remain alert, pointing out that rising temperatures and strong winds make conditions ripe for fires to spread quickly.

Since the start of Greece’s official wildfire season on May 1, more than 190 people have been detained in connection to fire-related incidents. Of these, 125 were accused of negligence, such as burning plant debris or using tools that generate sparks, according to fire officials.
