Russia, India want to expand collaboration in creating war-vessels

(MENAFN) Moscow and New Delhi are aiming to deepen their cooperation in naval shipbuilding, according to Andrey Puchkov, CEO of Russia’s largest shipbuilding company. Speaking at the handover ceremony of the frigate Tamal to the Indian Navy, Puchkov highlighted Russia’s readiness to support India’s efforts to produce naval hardware domestically.

“India is a long-standing and trusted partner, and we strive to provide the best for our Indian friends,” Puchkov said. He noted that Russia has built a full series of ships for India and recently completed the latest batch constructed in Russia.

The Tamal, the eighth Russian-made Krivak-class frigate delivered to India over the past 20 years, contains 26% Indian components. Built at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, its construction was closely overseen by Indian specialists, according to India’s Defense Ministry.

Puchkov emphasized ongoing support for India’s ‘Make in India’ program by supplying necessary equipment to enable indigenous shipbuilding. He also mentioned numerous new collaborative projects both countries are eager to pursue.

Indian Navy officials welcomed Russia’s involvement, noting the Tamal’s symbolic name and mascot, which blend elements from Indian mythology and Russian national symbols.

India’s military continues to rely heavily on Russian equipment, which makes up about 60% of its arsenal. Recently, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and India’s Rajnath Singh met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit to discuss further defense cooperation, including S-400 missile systems, Su-30 MKI upgrades, and procurement of vital military hardware.

In December 2024, India received another Russian-built Project 11356 stealth frigate, INS Tushil, and is currently constructing two similar Triput-class frigates at the Goa shipyard with Russian technology transfer and design support.
