British pound possibly to become ‘woke’
The Bank of England (BoE) has launched a public consultation on new themes for the next generation of British banknotes, sparking criticism from some politicians and citizens who claim the move promotes “woke” ideals.
Announced on Wednesday, the BoE’s proposal encourages the public to suggest themes that reflect a broader representation of the UK, including categories like nature, culture, innovation, national achievements, and diversity. Since 1970, UK banknotes have featured historical figures alongside the reigning monarch, with the current series showcasing Winston Churchill (£5), Jane Austen (£10), J.M.W. Turner (£20), and Alan Turing (£50).
BoE chief cashier Victoria Cleland emphasized that banknotes are symbolic of the UK’s national identity and could now reflect “real diversity,” considering gender, ethnicity, and disability in future designs.
The idea drew strong reactions from Conservative figures. Shadow Communities Secretary Kevin Hollinrake called the initiative “wrongheaded wokery,” while former Business Secretary Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg accused the BoE of wanting to erase British history in favor of the “banality of euro notes.”
Some social media users echoed those sentiments, framing the proposal as an attack on British culture. Others floated controversial figures such as author J.K. Rowling—whose outspoken views on gender identity have polarized public opinion—as possible candidates for the redesign.
The BoE's last update to banknotes, rolled out from 2016 to 2021, transitioned from paper to polymer to improve security and durability. The current consultation will remain open through July, with the final decision on future designs to be made by BoE Governor Andrew Bailey.
