Romania’s Parliament Elects New Leaders After Government Shifts
Senator Mircea Abrudean from the National Liberal Party (PNL) secured the Senate presidency with a decisive 89 votes for and 28 against, earning support from the ruling coalition. He replaces Ilie Bolojan, who stepped down after becoming prime minister on Monday.
Other contenders for the Senate’s top post were Mircia Chelaru of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), who garnered 27 votes, and Dumitru Manea of S.O.S. Romania, who attracted only a single vote.
In a separate electronic vote, PNL Senator Lucian Rusu was chosen as Senate vice-president, receiving 81 votes in favor.
In the Chamber of Deputies, Social Democrat Sorin Grindeanu was elected president with 201 votes, overshadowing his rival Ionel Goidescu of S.O.S. Romania, who obtained just 20 votes.
Following his win, Grindeanu stated that he would ensure a balanced relationship between the government and the opposition, emphasizing the necessity for legislative proposals to have transparent budgetary backing.
