Journalist Wins Settlement After ABC Fires Her Over Gaza Post
(MENAFN) Australian journalist Antoinette Lattouf has successfully claimed unlawful termination against the public broadcaster ABC, securing an award of AUD $70,000 (approximately $45,511), according to reports on Wednesday.
The Federal Court ruled that ABC violated the Fair Work Act by dismissing Lattouf partly due to her political stance opposing Israel’s military actions in Gaza, as reported by media.
Lattouf, a Lebanese-Australian reporter, was hired for a brief five-day contract with ABC in December 2023. However, her employment was cut short after just three days following her repost of a Human Rights Watch Instagram update about the Gaza conflict, captioned “HRW reporting starvation as a tool of war.” ABC claimed this violated its editorial guidelines.
The Human Rights Watch report highlighted evidence that Israeli authorities in Gaza have used starvation tactics as a method of warfare.
Lattouf brought forward a wrongful dismissal lawsuit, arguing her firing was motivated by her political opinions, ethnicity, and pressure from pro-Israel advocacy groups.
Since October 2023, the Israeli military has launched an intense assault on Gaza, resulting in over 56,000 Palestinian deaths, the majority being women and children.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel faces genocide charges before the International Court of Justice related to its ongoing military operations in the region.
