UK Prepares Acquiring F-35A Jets
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is preparing to buy at least 12 F-35A fighter jets, which have the capability to carry nuclear weapons, as part of its plan to join NATO’s airborne nuclear mission.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to reveal this decision on Wednesday during the NATO summit in the Netherlands, urging member countries to deepen their dedication to the alliance, according to an official statement.
These F-35A aircraft can be armed with conventional munitions but also have the ability to be equipped with US-manufactured nuclear bombs if required.
Produced predominantly by the American firm Lockheed Martin, this fifth-generation fighter is among the most sophisticated warplanes globally, though it comes with a high price tag.
Starmer stated, "In an era of radical uncertainty, we can no longer take peace for granted, which is why my government is investing in our national security.”
The government at Downing Street described this initiative as "the biggest strengthening of the UK's nuclear posture in a generation."
“The UK’s commitment to NATO is unquestionable, as is the alliance’s contribution to keeping the UK safe and secure,” Starmer affirmed. “But we must all step up to protect the Euro-Atlantic area for generations to come.”
He also highlighted that the decision would support around 100 companies and safeguard 20,000 jobs across the country, ushering in a "new era for our world-leading Royal Air Force."
