Heat Wave, Storms Spark Emergency in New York
(MENAFN) Governor Kathy Hochul of New York State has officially declared a state of emergency across up to 32 counties due to intense weather conditions and soaring temperatures.
On Sunday morning, a series of severe thunderstorms battered the region, leading to fallen trees, damaged infrastructure, and widespread power outages.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives in Central New York after being struck by falling trees amid storms that included tornado activity.
A prolonged heat wave is forecast to grip New York from Sunday through Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory predicting heat indexes reaching between 105°F and 110°F on Monday and Tuesday throughout the Tri-State area.
In response, New York City activated an extreme heat warning alongside a code red alert starting Saturday, making cooling centers accessible to the public and opening shelters for those experiencing homelessness.
To support voters during Tuesday’s Democratic mayoral primary, the New York City Election Board announced that fans and water will be provided at polling sites lacking air conditioning.
Despite preparations, Southeast Queens encountered a power outage on Monday morning, leaving more than 6,000 residents without electricity.
New York City Emergency Management reports that heat-related fatalities exceed 500 annually, mostly occurring in homes without air conditioning—a death toll surpassing those caused by hurricanes, floods, or winter storms.
Beyond New York, approximately 170 million Americans across the central and eastern United States are enduring an oppressive heat dome this week. Philadelphia has also declared a multi-day heat health emergency in response to the extreme conditions.
